Freeland Construction Company is the Owner’s Representative at Union Station Project in Springfield Massachusetts

$77.8 million project will integrate multiple transit modes in one convenient, functional and attractive transportation complex.

Phase I: 68.3 million program of independent transit utility will reconstruct Union Station as a primary transportation hub for the region and will include:

  • Restoration of Terminal Building and its central concourse
  • Consolidation of transit functions on the west side of the terminal building ground floor
  • Creation of 7,000 +/- net sq. ft. of commercial rental space on the east side terminal building
  • Removal of the Baggage Building and construction of 26-bay bus terminal and a 255-space parking garage
  • Restoration and reactivation of the passenger tunnel linking the terminal building to Lyman Street and the rail boarding platform

Phase II: Full Redevelopment will:

  • Activate upper floors, adding transit-related commercial space (64,000 +/- net sq. ft.)
  • Include two additional levels of parking (122 spaces)


Early Construction Work:

  • Terminal Hazmat Remediation - complete
  • Soil Nails – Phase 1 installation complete
  • Baggage Building Demo – underway
  • Terminal Interior Demo – expected start mid December

Procurement (per MGL c.149a):

  • Garage Trade Contractor Pre-qualification – complete
  • Terminal Building Trade Contractor Pre-qualification – complete
  • Garage Bidding – early December
  • Terminal Bidding – late January
